Boxing: A Lesson in Courage and Resilience
Boxing teaches courage, resilience, and the ability to solve problems quickly under stress. Led by a Cuban bronze medalist and a coach who has produced a current world champion.
The Cuban boxing system begins in primary schools, where sports are given high priority within the education system. It’s here that potential athletes are identified. Talented youths are then sent to specialized schools to focus on developing their skills. From there, they enter a highly competitive youth training program.
Teofilo Stevenson, a legendary Cuban boxer, won three Olympic gold medals (1972, 1976, and 1980) and was renowned for his sportsmanship, earning the UNESCO Pierre de Coubertin Fair Play Prize in 1989. After retiring from boxing in 1986, he served in the Cuban parliament and as vice president of the Cuban Boxing Federation.
