Afro-cuban religion
You cannot truly understand Cuban music without recognizing the influence of African musical traditions. In this camp, we study and preserve popular genres like Son and Bolero, as well as African-derived sacred music, such as Santería.
Santería is a pantheistic syncretism of the Yoruba gods from Southwestern Nigeria and Catholic saints. Its rituals enable human beings to connect directly with the divine through possession, where the gods are said to “mount” or "climb" an initiate.
These rituals often take place in rented halls specifically for the purpose or privately within Santería homes, which are ritually "washed" and prepared with the appropriate offerings.
